"짜릿한 손맛을 느끼고 싶으세요? 여수엑스포로 오세요."

여수 그리고 바다를 즐기면서 체험하기 ⑤ 체험 전시 시설

여수 엑스포의 포스터예요. 그런데 왜 '손과 바다'라고 이름을 붙였을까요? 가만히 들여다보니, 사람의 손 위에 새가 내려앉아 있네요. 바다 식물도 보이고요. 시간과 공간을 초월해 자연과 조화롭게 공존하라는 것 같지요?

(It is the poster for Yeosu Expo. Why is it named 'hands and sea'? When we look at it, we can see a bird is squatting a person's hand that is painted white. There are also sea plants. Doesn't it seem in harmonious co-existence with nature, transcending time and space?)

그런데 왜 하필 손? 혹시 '손맛'을 느끼라는 건 아닐까요? 물고기가 입질하거나 물고 당길 때 낚싯대를 잡은 손에 전해 오는 손맛! 그러고 보니, 맞네요. 그 짜릿한 손맛을 온몸으로 느낄 수 있는 곳이 여수 엑스포거든요.
(But why a hand? Could it mean to experience 'first hand' by any chance? It's like the feeling that one gets when fish bite or pull on the fishing rod! It is Yeosu Expo where you can feel such a thrilling first hand experience throughout your entire body.)

"에너지를 체험하고 싶으세요? 에너지파크로 가세요."
("Want to experience some energy? Go to the Energy Park.")

'에너지 파크'는 테마공원인데, 실내 전시와 야외 체험으로 나누어져 있어요. 실내에서는 무선충전 전기버스와 수소연료 전기차, 태양광 발전 등에 대해 설명하고 있는데, 좀 지루해요. 에너지 파크의 핵심은 밖에 있지요.
(The "Energy Park" is a theme park, and it is divided into an indoor display and outdoor experience. If you go inside, you can learn about things like wireless charging, electric buses, hydrogen fuel electric vehicles, and solar-light power generation, though it can be a bit boring. The highlight of the Energy Park is on the outside.)

먼저 체험시설 '자전거 물대포'! 자전거 페달을 밟아 발사한 물로 터빈을 돌리면서, 물로 전기를 만드는 수력발전의 원리를 체험할 수 있는 놀이예요. 여럿이서 함께 할 수 있어서, 어린이들은 시간 가는 줄 몰라해요.
(First, the 'bicycle water cannon'! It is a bike that allows you to learn the principles of waterpower generation, which makes electricity with water, by turning the turbine when you step on the bicycle pedal and produce electricity. Since you can play with many others, kids like it a lot.)

풍력 발전의 원리를 체험하는 '바람 페달', 파력 발전의 원리를 체험하는 '내 몸은 파도', 그네를 타는 행동이 에너지가 되어 오르골 음악소리를 연주하는 '에너지 그네'도 끝내 줘요.
(There are some other unique and inspiring devices; the 'wind pedal' to understand the principle of wind power generation; 'My body is a wave' to understand the principle of the wave power generation; and the 'Energy swing' that plays the 'orgel music sound' while having the behavior of riding the swing becoming energy.)

"육상에서 어업을 체험하고 싶으세요? 원양어업 체험장으로 가세요."
("Want to experience fishery on dry ground? Go to the Deep Sea Fishery Park.")

'원양어업 체험장'에 가면 원양어선이 있어요. '2012 엑스포'라는 이름이 붙어 있지요. 안에 들어서면 어선의 조타실처럼 꾸며놓은 곳을 볼 수 있어요. 퀴즈를 맞히면 조타실의 기계장치를 조작할 수 있는 기회도 주어지지요.
(If you visit the 'Deep Sea Fishery Park', you can see a deep-sea fishing vessel. It's a named '2012 Expo'. If you go inside, you can see a place that is decorated like the steering house of the fishing vessel. If you guess the quiz correctly, you can get the opportunity to operate the machines.)

배에서 내리면 오싹함이 느껴지는 '냉동어창'이 있어요. 원양어선에서 잡은 참치를 가공하는 곳이지요. 1미터가 넘는 참치가 컨베이어 벨트를 지나가며 어떻게 참치통조림으로 만들어지는가 하는 과정을 한눈에 볼 수 있어요.
(When you get off the vessel, there is a 'freezing fishroom' where you can experience a chill. It is the place for processing the tuna caught by the deep-sea fishing vessel. You can see the process of how the tuna, that is more than 1m long, is passed by the conveyor belt to be made into canned tuna.)

밖에 있는 '전통어구 미니어처'도 꼭 보세요. 죽방렴, 어전, 각망을 실제보다 축소해서 만들어 놓은 것인데, 현대의 최첨단 어구와 비교해 보면 격세지감이 들 거예요. 물고기의 피해를 줄이려는 선조들의 배려도 인상적이고요.
(Don't miss the 'traditional fishing gear display' set up outside. It is the bamboo weirs, palace, and nets that have been downsized, and if you compare them with the modern cutting-edge fishing gears, you would be surprised to see how much things have changed. It is also impressive to see our ancestors' wise methods to minimize the damages on fish as well.)

("Wanna experience fisheries on dry land? Go to the 'Coastal Fishery Park.")

'연안어업 체험장'은 오동도 길목에 있어서, 엑스포 입장권 없이도 들어갈 수 있어요. 체험장을 바다 위에 설치해 놓아 파도의 부드러운 움직임을 온몸으로 느낄 수 있지요. 하지만 멀미가 날 정도는 아니니 걱정하지 마세요.
(The 'Coastal Fishery Park' is located on the corner of Odong-do. You can go without Expo tickets. As the park is installed on the sea, it is possible to feel the smooth movement of waves all over your body. But don't worry, because you won't feel motion sickness!)

'연안어선 전시장'을 지나 '미니 양식장'에 가면 굴이나 홍합, 전복 등이 어떻게 양식되는가를 알 수 있어요. 양식장 안에서 무리를 지어 헤엄치는 물고기들의 장관도 볼 수 있고요. 농어, 졸복, 감성돔, 돌돔 등 많기도 해요.
(If you go to the 'Mini-Farms' after passing by the 'Coastal Fishery Vessel Exhibition', you can see how oysters, mussels, and abalone are farmed. You can also see fish swimming in clusters in the farm. There are also many perch, takifugu, black sea bream, and parrot fish as well.)

이제 '바다 숲'으로 갈까요. 산에 나무를 심듯이, 바다에도 해조류를 심는다고 해서 바다 숲이래요. 여기에선 바다 생물을 만져볼 수도 있어요. 멍게 입은 더하기(+), 똥구멍은 빼기(-) 모양인 걸 처음 알았어요. 그 손맛도요.
(Now, let's go to the 'Sea Forest'. It is called the 'Sea Forest' because it is the place where marine plants are planted in the sea, just like trees are planted in the jungle. Here, you can touch the sea creatures. I learned that the mouth of sea squirt is 'plus (+) shaped', and the anus was 'minus (-) shaped'. I could experience it first hand  too.)

여수엑스포에는 눈으로만 보는 것이 아니라 직접 만져 보고 작동해 볼 수 있는 곳이 많아요. 그중에서 특히 에너지 파크와 원양어업 체험장, 그리고 연안어업 체험장은 어린이와 함께 가는 관람객에게는 꼭 추천하고 싶어요.
(At the Yeosu Expo, there are many things you can see, and even operate. Especially, among them all, I strongly want to recommend the Energy Park, Deep-sea fishery vessel park, and the Coastal Vessel Parks to the spectators who come with their kids.)

박람회장을 둘러보고서 누가 그러대요. 후진국은 과거를 말하고, 중진국은 미래를 말하는데, 선진국은 현재를 말하더라고요. 그런데 체험 시설에 가면 '바다의 과거와 현재, 미래'를 한꺼번에 체험할 수 있어요. 그것도 즐기면서.
(I remember what someone said while walking around the exhibition venue. Underdeveloped countries tell the past, developing countries tell the future, and the developed countries tell the present. But when you go to the experience facilities, you can see the 'past, present, and the future of the sea' all at once. Have fun!)
