젊은 여수 엑스포를 세계에 소개하다 ① 주최국 전시관
(I will Introduce the lively Yeosu Expo to the world ① The Host Country's Exhibition Hall)

학교 다니면서 제일 재미있는 게 뭐예요? 공부가 제일 재미있다고요? 정말이에요? 에이, 그건 아닌 것 같아요. 공부는 좀 그렇잖아요. 공부가 그렇게 지겨우면 학교는 어떻게 다니느냐고요? 친구들이 있잖아요, 친구들이.
(What's the most exciting thing while in your school? Maybe, studying? It may be so, but I don't think it is true. Studying is not funny but boring. If you feel studying is boring, why do you go to school? We should think about another function of school. In my opinion, school is the best place to make friends and communicate with them. And I love my friends, the precious people in my life.)

그렇다면 학교에서 제일 싫어하는 건 뭐예요? 시험이라고요? 그래요, 시험! 세계 어디에서나 시험은 다 그런가 보네요. 우리 학교에서도 얼마 전에 시험을 치렀는데, 글쎄, <지구과학>에 이런 문제가 나왔어요.
(Then what do you dislike doing most in your school? Taking a test? Is that so? I think most of the students in the world couldn't agree more. Sometimes, I wish the test would disappear from the earth.  The other day, we took midterm exams in our school. By the way, I came across the following examination question in Earth Science.)

"[서술형2] 지구 최초의 생명체는 바다에서 출현하였다. 그 원인에 대해 80자 내외로 간략히 서술하세요.(단, 기권의 성분과 관련지어 설명할 것)". 와, 어렵지요? 우리가 그냥 공부가 재미없다고 한 건 아니에요.
([Question 2] A scientist insisted that it was in the ocean where the first creatures on the earth appeared. Write down why he think so within 80 words, relating the answer with aerology. What do you think about this? Difficult? I think so.)

그런데 우리 학교에서 공부 제일 잘하는 친구는 이렇게 답을 적었네요. "최초의 생명체가 탄생했을 때, 기권에는 오존층이 존재하지 않았다. 하지만, 바다의 표면은 자외선을 어느 정도 막아주었고, 결과적으로 생물체들은 바다에서 진화하는 것이 더 쉬웠다."라고요.
(One of my smartest friends wrote down the answer like this. "At the time when the very first creatures appeared, there was no ozone layer in the atmosphere. The ocean surface, however, did protect the inside from ultraviolet rays a little, So it was easier for creatures to evolve in the ocean.")

어라, 그렇다면 오존층이 사라지면 육지에는 생명이 살기 어렵겠는데요. 무슨 말인지, 잘 모르겠다고요? 사실, 저희도 잘은 알지 못해요. 그래서 우리 친구들과 함께 주제관에 가서 이 문제를 놓고 이야기하고 싶은데요. 어때요?
(But as you know, if the ozone layer disappeared, it would be more difficult for living things to live on the earth. Do you understand what we are saying? In fact, we don't know exactly. Hey, friends, to find the correct answer, let's go to the Theme exhibition hall in Yeosu Expo. Would you join us?)

"엑스포 주제를 실감나게 표현한 <주제관>으로 가 볼까요"
(Let's go to the Theme exhibition hall which expresses the Expo theme dynamically.)

가까이 보아야 아름다운 것도 있지만, 멀리서 보아야 그 아름다움을 제대로 알 수 있는 것도 있어요. 우리나라 최초로 바다 위에 세워진, 2012여수엑스포 주제관 건물이 바로 그래요. 바다가 주는 역동적인 이미지를 수직과 수평으로 표현한 게, 마치 물결 모양처럼 아름답거든요.
(There are the things that we find beautiful only when we see them from a distance even though there are still beautiful things to see up close. The Theme exhibition hall, the first offshore exhibition hall in Korea, is the main building expressing the Expo theme, "The Living Ocean and Coast." It represents the dynamic image that the ocean makes in the form of beautiful waves).

우선 로비에서는 가볍게 몸을 푸세요. 해양기지를 통해 본 전 세계의 살아있는 바다의 모습을 보면서 말이죠. 그러고 전시1관으로 가면, 지금까지 우리가 몰랐던 바다의 가치와 가능성을 깨달을 수가 있어요.
(First of all, let's start from the lobby. Visitors are able to see the great oceans of the planet full of life observed from a horde of maritime research posts all over the globe. At the Exhibition 1, it is designed to promote our understandings on the unseen values and possibilities in the sea that we do not pay attention to.)

'아, 이렇게 소중한 바다였는데' 하면서 전시2관으로 가면, 그 소중한 바다가 어떻게 위협받고 있는가를 보여 주는 영상물이 여러분을 맞을 거예요. 그러다 드디어 오늘의 메인쇼 '듀공과 소년의 만남'이 현실과 환상을 넘나들며 우리를 기다리고 있어요.
(Realizing that the sea has priceless values, we can go to the Exhibition 2. With real-time interactive features and designs of the exhibition space, it shows us a video, which poses how the precious sea is being threatened. Then at last a story of adventures featuring a boy who dreams of the great seas and a dugong, which is his friend, is told. In the climax of the video, a surprise entry by the dugong and the boy in real life onto the stage will provide an excitement to the visitors.)

그리고 이 모든 것의 결론은 전시3관에 있어요. 하지만 그 내용은 비밀! 단 하나 약속드릴 수 있는 것은, 왜 시험 문제를 보여 주다가 이리로 안내했는지, 그제야 알게 되실 거예요.
(The conclusion of all of these stories is at the Exhibition 3. But it is a secret! One thing that I promise is that you'll finally come to know what I mean when I give you a difficult problem.)

"여수 엑스포에 의미를 불어넣는 <부제관>으로 가 볼까요"
("Let's go to the Sub-Theme exhibition hall inspiring Yeosu Expo.)

우뚝 서서 아름다운 봉우리가 있는가 하면, 그 주변에 있는 야트막한 봉우리가 아름다운 게 있어요. 앞엣것이 주제관이라면 뒤엣것이 바로 엑스포 부제관이에요.
(We can see some beautiful hills around. Walking along the hills, we can find the main exhibition hall and other connected exhibitions classified into some sub-themes.)

부제관은 이름 그대로 여수 엑스포의 주제인 "살아 있는 바다, 숨 쉬는 연안"을 더욱 구체화한 전시관이지요. 부제관은 기후환경관, 해양문명도시관, 해양산업기술관, 해양생물관이 있는데, 오늘은 두 군데만 가 보기로 해요.
(Yeosu Expo's slogan, "The Living Ocean and Coast" is explained specifically in the sub-theme exhibitions, such as the Climate&Environment exhibition hall, Marine Civilization exhibition hall, Marine Industrial  and Technology exhibition hall, and the Marine life exhibition hall. Today, we'll visit two exhibition halls.)

지금이 만약 지구가 멸망하기 5분 전이라면 어떤 느낌일 것 같으세요? 그 소름 돋는 기분을 체험하려면 '기후환경관'으로 가 보셔요. 이곳에 가면 '데드라인 5분 전'이라는 영상을 만날 수 있는데, 와, 끔찍해요. 지구 온난화로 인한 계속되는 해수면의 상승, 곳곳에서 잠기는 섬나라와, 생물체들이 전혀 살지 않아 그 자체의 기능을 상실한 바다의 모습을 보여 주거든요. "기후환경의 조절자, 바다"라는 기후환경관의 주제를 실감하실 거예요.
(If there were five minutes left before the Earth's destruction, what would come into your mind? If you want to experience such a feeling, go to the Climate&Environment exhibition hall. Visiting there, you'll watch a short film, "Deadline before 5 minutes". It's  so terrible! In the film,  you can experience global warming, the rising of sea level, a disappearing island and the reality of a dead sea which has lost it's functions. We can realize the importance of the ocean as "a Controller of the climate.)

너무 우울하시다고요? 그러실 거예요. 그래서 준비해 놓은 게, '해양도시문명관'이에요. 육지에만 길이 있는 게 아니라, 바다에도 길이 있다는 걸 보여 주는 게 바로 '해양문명관'의 메시지거든요. 여기에서는 바다를 통해 문명이 전파되는 과정을 보여 주는 다양한 물품들을 만날 수 있어요. 인도네시아에서 발견된 난파선의 모습을 보면서 당시 해양문명의 교류를 짐작할 수도 있고요. 그리고 '해양도시관'에 있는 수중 터널도 놓치지 말고 보세요. 마치 바다 속에 건설된 해양 도시에 온 듯한 느낌을 확실히 받으실 거예요.
(Do you feel so depressed after watching the film? If so, let's go to the Marine Civilization exhibition hall. You can find a surprising fact that there were efforts to develop our civilization in the sea as well as on land. Also, we can guess the level of marine civilization through various relics which were discovered from wrecked ships in  Indonesia. Don't miss watching "an underwater tunnel" in the Marine Civilization exhibition hall. You feel as if you visited a marine city constructed in the sea.)

(" We can see the past, the present, and the future of Korea in the Korean exhibition hall.")

한국을 우리나라에서는 '금수강산' 이라고 해요. 국토 전체가 비단에 수를 놓은 듯 아름답다는 말이지요. 그런데 한국관에 들르시면 이 말에 고개를 끄덕이실 거예요.
(People call Korea ''Guemsugangsan'', which means that the nature of Korea is very beautiful like a piece of landscape painting. If you visit the Korean exhibition hall, you will know why they do.)

우선 건물 모양이 아름다워요. 건물은 우리의 전통 무늬인 태극 문양을 본떠서 만든 건데, 부드러운 곡선미에 취하실 거예요. 더욱이 한국관은 환경 문제를 해결하기 위해 수소전지 시스템을 이용한 전시관이래요.
(First of all, you will find that the shape of the Korean exhibition hall is so soft and curved. We call this style "Taeguk", the traditional pattern. The building reflects this beauty and you will be surprised when you see the building. This building is eco-friendly, using hydrogen electric cells in order to avoid environmental pollution.)

하지만 안으로 들어가시면 더욱 놀라실 거예요. 두 개의 공간(전시관, 영상관)을 통해서 한국인의 해양 역량과 함께, 한 폭의 동양화 같은 바다의 모습을 보여 주기 때문이지요.
(Also, you will find two attractive spaces inside. One is a display booth, and the other a media booth. You can see the potential power of the ocean and a beautiful sea like a piece of oriental landscape.)

전시관에서는 대형 스크린들을 통해서 한국의 바다에서 이루어지는 삶의 모습, 그 과거와 현재, 미래를 만나실 수 있어요. 몇 십 년 전만 해도 외국의 원조를 받았던 대한민국이 이제는 다른 나라를 원조하는 위치로 성장한 '한강의 기적'에 놀라실 거예요. 끝으로 한국의 전통 무용인 강강술래가 나오면 같이 더덩실 춤을 추는 게 어때요?
(In the display booth, you can meet the past, the present, and the future about Korean people's lives and the sea on the big screen. Although Korea was a poor country which received lots of help from other countries in the past, our country provides many assistances to international society now. We call it "Miracle of Han river". How about dancing together with "Ganggangsulrae" rhythm, the traditional Korean dance.) 

그리고 영상관에서는요, 세계 최대 규모인 돔 스크린을 이용해서 영화를 보는 듯한 영상을 만나실 수 있어요. 15분 동안의 짧은 관람이지만 그 감흥은 오래 가실 거예요. 
(In the media booth, you can enjoy a 15-minute short film on the biggest dome screen in the world. Although the film is short, your inspiration from it will last for a long time.)

여수 엑스포 마스코트, 여니 수니예요. 사랑한다고 말을 건네고 있네요. 귀엽죠? 예쁘죠? 그런데 우리 여수에서는 많은 사람들이 스스로가 여니 수니라고들 여겨요. 그만큼 엑스포를 생각하는 마음이 간절하다는 말이지요.
(Here are 'Yeony and Suny', the Yeosu Expo mascots. They are very cute and always smile. We love them. Come to Yeosu Expo, you will get happy feelings from "Yeony and Suny". We are looking forward to the successful Yeosu Expo.) ' 

물론 여수 오시는 길이 좀 멀어요. 그럼에도 불구하고 여수에 오시면, 그런 불편함이 씻긴 듯 사라질 거예요. 멋있는 엑스포 관람도 그렇지만, 친절한 여수 시민들이 그렇게 만들어 드리고 있거든요.
(Even though it is far from your cities, you will be satisfied with all of the Expo and Yeosu's kind citizens. You will never regret visiting Yeosu Expo.)

더욱이 여수 엑스포는 여느 박람회와 달리 환경 박람회라고 하잖아요. 바다는 인류의 영원한 고향이며 바다를 건강하게 지키는 것이 결국 인류를 지키는 길이거든요. 바로 그 '생존의 문제'를 생각하는 곳이 여수 엑스포예요.  꼭 오세요!
(Moreover, unlike other Expos, the theme of this Expo is the clean and eco- friendly ocean. The ocean is the comfortable home for all of humanity. We have to keep our sea clean for  our children. Yeosu Expo is the place to address the problems we face in the future. We are inviting you to our city. Please come to Yeosu Expo.)
