여니수니와 함께 떠나는 여수 여행ㆍ10
(Trip to Yeosu with Yeony and Suny⋅10)

"엑스포에 오셨으니, 며칠 묵었다 가셔야죠?"
("Coming to the Expo, you are supposed to stay here for some days.")
"하룻밤 정도는 찜질방에서, 좋은 추억 만들어 가세요."

우리나라는 예로부터 지나가는 나그네일지라도, 청하면 하룻밤 따뜻하게 묵어가게 해 주었어요. 소박하지만 정성 가득한 밥상도 차려 요기도 하게 해 주고, 지친 몸을 쉬게 사랑방을 내어 주기도 했지요. 요즘이야 예전 같을 수는 없겠지만 그 마음이야 어디 가겠어요.
(Our ancestors let travelers stay in their warm houses. Also they willingly serve humble but sincerity eating table and make them pass the night in private home. Although we can't be so much heartly as then, that mind still remain now.)

여수에 오면 묵어갈 곳이 많아요. '여수세계박람회 지정 숙박업소'를 찾아가면 기대에 어긋나지 않을 거예요. 오늘은 '젊은' 친구들을 독특한 잠자리로 안내할까 해요. 찜질방이에요. 여러 사람들과 어울려 몸으로 부대끼며 이야기도 나누며 하룻밤 보내는 게 의미있을 것 같아서요. 100달러 넘게 주는 호텔이나 펜션 등에 비해 다소 불편하겠지만, 젊어 고생은 사서라도 한다는 우리네 속담이 있어요. 그러니 우리 한번 가 봐요, 추억 만들러!
(There are many places to stay in Yeosu. You will never be disappointed to take a visit '2012 Yeosu Expo Korea'. I would like show young people over peculiar bedding. That's 'Jjimjilbang' I think it so meaningful that you can join in talking with your partners and chat with others while staying there. It's may be somewhat uncomfortable than overspending 100 dollars hotel or pension. But didn't you ever hear that it is good for the young to suffer some privations with intension. Are you agree with me? So let's go! To make memory!)

여수에는 찜질방이 많아요. 돌산해수타운(여수시 돌산읍), 유심천(여수시 소라면), 백옥사우나(여수시 신월동), 좌수영 사우나(여수시 선원동), 화인온천과 스포렉스(여수시 여서동), 디오션 리조트(여수시 소호동) 등이 있으니까요. 왜 이리 많으냐고요? 이제 찜질방은, 주말이면 가족 단위로 가서 쉬고 오는 우리네 일상이 되다시피 하였으니까요.
(There are so many Jjimjilbangs, Korean style health spars in Yeosu. There are Dolsan seawater Town(Dolsan-eup, Yeosu-si), Yusimcheon(Sora-myeon, Yeosu-si), Baekoksauna(Sinwol-dong, Yeosu-si), Juasuyeong sauna(Seonwon-dong, Yeosu-si), Hwain hot-springs resort & Sporex(Yeoseo-dong, Yeosu-si), and The Ocean resort(Soho-dong, Yeosu-si). Why are they so many? Because now Jjimjilbang has become a great place to relax in our everyday lives with our family during weekend.)

그곳에 가면 뜨근뜨근한 곳에서 찜질도 할 수 있고, 시원하게 목욕을 할 수도 있고, 하룻밤 묵어갈 수도 있어요. 그런데 이 모든 것을 다 즐기는 데 7달러 정도면 돼요. 그러니 마음에 부담 갖지 말고 우리 같이 가 보기로 해요. 우리도 동행을 할게요.
(In Jjimjilbang, we can have saunas, take a bath, even stay for a night. It takes only 7 dollars to enjoy it. So don't feel burdened and just have a try with us.)

들어가면 우선 목욕탕으로 가서 가볍게 몸을 씻고 찜질복으로 갈아입고 찜질방으로 가면 돼요. 후끈할 거예요. 아무데나 몸을 눕히면, 땀에 촉촉이 젖으면서, 아아 쌓였던 스트레스가 확 날아갈 거예요.
(Walking in the Jjimjilbang, first we take a bath in public bath. And  go to sauna after wearing Jjimjilboks, clothes for sauna. Let's warm ourselves on the heated floor! It may be a little hot. But it will be our good stressbuster, making us sweat.)

그런데 찜질방에는 우리의 온돌 문화가 스며 있어요. 그러니까 찜질방은 현대판 온돌이지요. 우리 온돌은 서양의 벽난로와는 원리가 달라요. 온돌은 아궁이에 불을 때어 그 열기로 방바닥을 데우는 방식인데, 벽난로는 방에서 직접 불을 때 공기를 데우는 방식이잖아요.
(As Jjimjilbang embodies the cultural heritage of Korean ancestors, Ondol, Korean floor heating system unlikely Western fireplace, is a hot air heating system, Ondol heats floor by making a fire in the furnace, sending its heat to flat stone 'Gudeuljang' under the floor.)

놀다 보니 시장하시다고요? 그럴 거예요. 땀을 빼고 났으니 갈증도 났을 거고요. 그럼 달걀에 식혜를 권합니다! 맥반석에 구운 달걀은 1달러에 3개이고, 얼음이 둥둥 떠 있는 시원한 식혜는 한 양푼에 5달러예요. 아 참, 달걀을 깰 때 친구 머리에 대고 톡톡 깨 먹는 재미도 있으니, 알아서들 하세요.
(Are you hungry after enjoying? I guess you might feel thirsty because you sweat it out a lot. If so, I recommend you 'Sikhye with baked eggs'. Baked 3 eggs on elvan is 1~2 dollars and  a bowl of  cold drink called Sikhye is just 5 dollars. Ah! you can enjoy breaking baked egg on friends head! It's up to you!)

그러다 졸리면 한숨 붙이세요. 그러다 깨어나면 참숯 불가마에도 들어가 보고요. 처음에는 섭씨 80도의 불가마에서 나오는 열기로 숨이 막힐 거예요. 하지만 혈액 순환에도 그만이고 피부 미용에도 좋대요. 그러니 참으세요. 우리 할머니들은 아궁이에 불을 지피며 아랫도리를 따뜻하게 하고, 온돌에 몸을 지지면서 배를 따뜻하게 하여 부인병을 이겨 냈대요.
(Then if you're sleepy, take a nap for a while. When you wake up, try entering the 'hardwood charcoal Bulgama' like a furnace. At first you'll be choked with the heat of 80℃ from the 'Bulgama'. But it's the best for the circulation of the blood and good for your skin. So be patient! Our old ladies made the lower part of the body warm, taking a fire in a furnace and overcame woman's disease by heating their bodies and making their bellies warm with Ondol.)

찜질방에서 신나게 놀았으니, 이제 개운하게 목욕이나 할까요. 그런데 우리나라에는 때를 미는 독특한 목욕 문화가 자리 잡고 있어요. 그러니 때를 밀어 보세요. 단돈 13달러면 온몸을 깨끗하게 한 다음 전신 마사지까지 받을 수 있으니까요. 남탕에는 아저씨가, 여탕에는 아주머니가 때를 밀고 있으니, 몸을 맡겨 보세요. 후회하지 않으실 거예요.
(Having fun in Jjimjilbang, what about taking a bath freshly? By the way, unique culture of scrubbing off the dead skin took in our country. Thus try it once! Just a 13 dollars do not only clean your whole body, but get a body massage. There is a male or female service in each section who helps to take off dirty on your skin called Ttaemiri in Korea. So entrust him or her with your exhausted body. You won't regret it!)

이제 보니 엑스포가 얼마 남지 않았네요. 사실, 여수엑스포 기간인 6월 24일은, 음력으로 5월 5일로 우리네 단오 명절이에요. 모를 낸 후 여유로운 시점이라서 옛날에는 창포물에 머리를 감기도 하고, 그네를 뛰기도 했대요. 아래 그림을 봐 보세요. 여인들이 목욕하는 모습도 정겹지만 저 뒤에서 몰래 훔쳐보는 떠꺼머리 총각의 시선이 웃음을 자아내지요.
(It will not be long before 2012 Yeosu Expo Korea starts soon. In fact, June 24th in Yeosu Expo duration is the fifth day of May of the lunar calendar, traditional Korean holiday, Dano. Once upon a time, after the sowing season, people used to wash their hair in water with sweet flag leaves and ride swings in this holiday. Look under the Sin's painting. The scene shows women taking bath feel warm, and men's eyes peeping behind cause laugh.)

그런데 다음에 있는 르느와르의 그림을 봐 보세요. 똑같이 목욕하는 풍경이라도 동양과 서양이 다른 것 같지요. 르느와르는 사람을 화폭의 중심에 놓고, 자연은 배경에 지나지 않게 배치해 놓았지요. 반면에 신윤복은 자연과 사람이 함께 어우러져 '단오풍정'을 만들어 내고 있네요. 서양화가 인간 중심인데 비해, 동양화는 자연 중심이라는 말이 실감이 나지요.
(However, take a careful look at the Renoir' painting. Although the two paintings describe similar scene that people are taking bath, the West and the Orient seem different. People are mainly drawn in the middle of canvas by Renoir whereas nature was drawn as only background. On the contrary, Sin Yunbok drew the painting that people are harmonized with nature, which makes 'Dano refinement'. We can recognize that Western painting is people-oriented but Oriental painting is nature-oriented.)

바로 이 마음으로 우리는 엑스포를 준비하고 있어요. 자연을 함부로 훼손하지 않고 자연과 조화를 이루며 살아가야 한다는 사람의 마음 말이에요. "살아 있는 바다, 숨 쉬는 연안"이라는 엑스포의 주제를 구현하기 위해 우리 여수 사람들이 얼마나 애를 썼는지, 꼭 와서 봐 주세요. 찜질방에 가서 푹 쉬고 목욕탕에서 때까지 밀었더니, 생각이 맑아진 걸까요?
(We are preparing for 2012 Yeosu Expo Korea in this attitude, not destroying nature but harmonizing it. Please come and see how  eagerly people in Yeosu struggled diligently to realize the title of 2012 Yeosu Expo Korea, "The Living Ocean and Coast". It may make us feel pure in heart to take a rest and wash off the dirt in Jjimjilbang.)
