국내외 교수·연구자들로 이루어진 사회대개혁지식네트워크가 미얀마 군부 쿠데타를 규탄하는 성명을 냈다. 이들은 "미얀마의 현재는 우리의 과거와 다르지 않다"며 연일 이어지고 있는 민주화 시위에 대한 연대와 지지 의사를 밝혔다.

지난달 1일 비상사태를 선포한 미얀마 군부는 쿠데타에 반발하는 국민을 향해 무차별적인 무력을 사용하고 있다. 이 과정에서 부상자는 물론 사망자까지 잇달아 발생하자 유혈진압을 비난하는 국제사회의 목소리가 계속된다. 한국에서도 이주민 단체는 물론 여러 시민사회단체가 미얀마 군부를 비판하는 성명을 냈고, 이번엔 교수·연구자들도 이러한 대열에 동참했다.

이번 성명을 통해 사회대개혁지식네트워크는 "그들이 처한 고통은 과거 우리가 겪은 고통"이라며 " 지금 영위하는 민주주의와 평화도 과거 군부독재에 맞선 수많은 희생의 결과물"이라고 설명했다. 사회대개혁지식네트워크는 "미얀마 시민의 위대한 투쟁을 적극적으로 지지한다"면서 "미얀마의 국내 정치에 대한 어떠한 외세의 개입도 반대하지만, 미얀마 시민의 민주화 요구를 무력으로 진압하려는 군부에 대해서 강력히 규탄한다"고 밝혔다.

다음은 국내외 교수·연구자들이 발표한 성명 전문이다. 원동욱 사회대개혁지식네트워크 운영위원장은 "성명서를 한글본과 영문본으로 준비했다. 영문본은 민주주의를 위해 투쟁하는 미얀마 민중들에게 지지를 보내기 위해 만들었다"고 말했다.

<미얀마 시민들의 민주화를 향한 열망을 지지하는 성명서>

반세기가 넘는 군부독재의 시간을 지나 어렵게 되찾은 미얀마의 민주주의가 다시 흔들리고 있다. 2월 1일 미얀마 군부가 다시 쿠데타를 감행하여 문민정부와 시민사회 지도자를 감금하고 미얀마의 민주주의를 전복하려 시도하고 있다. 분명한 것은 지난 총선에서 미얀마 국민이 선택한 것은 무력에 의한 군부의 통치가 아니라 문민정부와 민주주의의 진전이었다는 사실이다. 쿠데타에 반대하는 시민들은 '불복종'을 내걸고 미얀마 민주주의를 위한 위대한 저항을 시작하였다.

하지만 군부는 이들의 평화적인 시위와 불복종 운동에 무력 진압을 서슴지 않고 있다. 민주주의와 평화를 외치는 무고한 시민들에게 폭력적인 유혈진압을 자행하고 있으며, 지금, 이 순간에도 군부의 폭력적 진압에 사상자가 속출하고 있는 실정이다.

미얀마의 현재는 우리의 과거이다. 그들이 처한 고통은 과거 우리의 고통이었다. 지금 우리가 영위하는 민주주의와 평화는 과거 군부독재에 맞선 수많은 희생의 결과물이다. 미얀마의 현재의 한국 사회, 그리고 개혁을 추구하는 교수 연구자들의 모임인 사회대개혁 지식네트워크의 관심이 더욱 모이는 이유가 바로 여기에 있다.

우리는 민주화를 열망하며 군부 쿠데타에 맞서 거리로 나선 미얀마 시민의 위대한 투쟁을 적극적으로 지지한다. 미얀마의 국내 정치에 대한 어떠한 외세의 개입도 반대하지만, 미얀마 시민의 민주화 요구를 무력으로 진압하려는 군부에 대해서 강력히 규탄한다. 아울러 4.19혁명, 부마민주항쟁, 5.18민주화운동, 6월민주항쟁에 이어 촛불혁명을 통해 독재정권에 굴하지 않고 민주주의를 굳건히 지켜낸 우리는 미얀마 시민들이 군부독재의 폭압통치에 굴하지 않고, 기필코 민주주의를 쟁취할 것이라 믿는다. 이에 우리는 다음과 같이 주장한다.

1. 미얀마 군부는 시민들의 민주화 요구에 대한 폭력적 진압을 즉각 멈추고 하루속히 민간에 권력을 이양하라!
1. 미국과 중국은 제국과 패권주의의 관성을 버리고 미얀마 시민의 민주화 투쟁을 강대국 정치게임에 이용하지 말라!
1. 세계 각국의 정부와 시민사회는 미얀마 시민의 민주화 쟁취를 위한 국제적 지지와 연대에 적극적으로 동참하라!

<The Statement of Solidarity: Supporting Myanmar's Desire for Democratization>

Myanmar's hard-won democracy after more than half a century of military dictatorship is faltering again. Launching another coup on February 1, Myanmar's military has attempted to detain the leaders of civilian government and society and to overthrow democracy in Myanmar. However, as the last general election result revealed, the people of Myanmar chose the progress in civilian government and democracy, not the rule of the military. The people have organized a great resistance under 'civil disobedience' to restore democracy in Myanmar. However, the military has not hesitated to trample on their peaceful demonstrations and disobedience movements. Even at this moment, the military's violent suppression is inflicting heavy casualties.

Myanmar's present is South Korea's past. We deeply feel the same pain and struggle with Myanmar, acknowledging that the democracy and peace South Korea now leads resulted from countless sacrifices in fighting against the military dictatorship in the past.

We, The Knowledge Network for Social Reform of Korea, stand in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and their great fight for freedom and democracy. We strongly condemn the military for their violent suppression of Myanmar citizens' demands for democratization while opposing foreign intervention in its domestic affairs. We believe in the people of Myanmar that they will protect democracy until the end and not succumb to tyranny because we Koreans did, undergoing the April 19 Revolution, the Busan-Masan Democratic Uprising, the May 18 Democratic Uprising, and the Candlelight Revolution.

Therefore, we demand:

1. The Military of Myanmar to immediately stop the brutal suppression of the people calling for democracy and transfer the state power to the civilians.
1. The U.S. and China to abandon hegemonism, considering the struggle of Myanmar for democracy as their political game.
1. Governments and civil society worldwide to actively participate in providing international support for Myanmar's fight for democracy and freedom.

We express our commitment to stand with the people of Myanmar and all who fight for the fundamental human rights and restoration of democracy.
